Early Rising
My Child Wakes Up SO Early… What Should I Do?
I get it, all you’re asking for is a little sleep in here and there…it’s not too much to ask, right?
Some children sleep a little longer than others. And some…well, they wake up much earlier than others!
Typically, early rising is described as waking up before 6am.
The most common causes of Early Rising:
Environment (a sleep space that is too warm, too light, or too noisy)
Your child’s sleep space should be cool, dark and quiet. Light levels are particularly important as they have a profound influence on their body clock (circadian rhythm). Increased light will indicate to your little one’s brain that it’s time to wake up.
If they are hungry
If dinner is too early, or baby can’t make it through the night without a feed, they are more likely to wake up and stay awake. Hungry babies and children have a very difficult time falling back to sleep.
Their bedtime is too early
If the bedtime is too early and therefore too close to their last nap, there won’t be enough sleep pressure before bed.
Their bedtime is too late
While it may seem counterintuitive, going to bed late can contribute to early rising. Overtired children don’t typically sleep well and more often than not wake up early. Bring their bedtime slightly earlier if you think your child is overtired in the evening.
Too Much Daytime Sleep
Too much daytime sleep shortens the wake period and reduces sleep pressure, resulting in a shortened night sleep.
Genetics
While not as common as the above causes, but some children are just naturally early risers. Usually there’s a close relative that is also an early riser.
Aside from the above common checklist to look at. Here are some other considerations:
Nutrition
Timing of meals directly impacts circadian rhythm. So, if food is offered earlier and earlier to match the early wake time, this can actually reinforce early rising. Having consistent mealtimes during the day and ensuring breakfast isn’t moved earlier will limit the reinforcing.
First Nap
Anchoring the first nap (having it at the same time regardless of the wake-up time) and keeping it short can help discourage early waking.
