7 Tips to Get Sleep Back On Track After the Holidays

The holidays can be a wonderful time of year but many parents fear the festive season will wreak havoc on their child’s sleep routine.

My recommendation to the parents I coach is this: relax, enjoy the holidays with your family, and follow the tips below to get back on track:

  1. Give yourself a day or two to settle in (especially if you have had a time zone change). Don’t expect to get home and have the entire household back in routine within a few hours!

  2. Regardless of what happened on holiday, go back to your pre-holiday routine. But, remember to adjust wake time and overall daytime sleep so they are age appropriate.

  3. For babies older than five months of age, have a consistent wake up time.

  4. Be sure to get active awake time. I recommend lots of physical movement, ideally outside if possible.

  5. Regular, frequent feeds to maximise daytime calorie intake (minimizing the likelihood of them waking at night because they’re hungry

  6. Exposure to early morning sunlight will help set their circadian rhythm and melatonin production (simply put, early morning sunlight helps regulate their internal body clock).

  7. Ask for help if you need it! You don’t have to do it alone (Why I sought sleep support). Enter the New Year with the support you need and set yourself up to thrive in 2024.
